Common Core State Standards

The Common Core State Standards are the foundational work for all future programs, lesson designs, and school goals.  The standards are designed to facilitate "college and career readiness."  Please be aware that students will be required to do the following on standardized assessments:

  • Type responses onto a computer that answer prompts related to reading passages.
  • Typed paragraphs will be the normal response to assessment questions.
  • Students must be fluent with typing by Grade 3.
  • Students must be able to play videos online to answer prompts.
  • Students must be able to scroll up and down on a computer screen while online or reviewing documents.
  • Students must be able to use tabs and interact between different computer windows while doing research online during a test.
  • Students must be able to type essays in response to literature.
  • Students must be able to solve math problems in multiple ways. One way is no longer acceptable.
  • Students must be able to research, inquire, and use multiple online resources and articles on the computer screen to provide a typed response.

As you can see from some of the examples above, there are major shifts and educational reform.  Barton staff continues to look forward to the challenge and our staff members are ready to forge ahead to help all students become college and career ready!
