STEM and the Arts - STEM Expo

Dramatic Results and Boeing have partnered up to bring STEM and the Arts to every student here at Barton Elementary.  Every student participates in an 8 to 12 hour STEM and Arts course. Each grade has a different STEM study area and our students enjoy the creativity in the program.  This program infuses Art with the STEM field which bring Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math to life!  Grade 3-5 students participates in the program from October to December and our Grade K-2 students enjoy the program from March to May.

Common Core State Standards Implementation

The Common Core State Standards are here!  Barton staff will begin professional development on the Common Core State Standards. These standards will be the foundational work for all future programs, lesson designs, and school goals.  The standards are designed to facilitate "college readiness."  Please be aware that students will be required to do the following on future standardized assessments:

  • Type responses onto a computer that answer prompts related to reading passages.
  • Typed paragraphs will be the normal response to assessment questions
  • Students must be fluent with typing by Grade 3
  • Students must be able to play videos online to answer prompts
  • Students must be able to scroll up and down on a computer screen while online or reviewing documents
  • Students must be able to use tabs and interact between different computer windows while doing research online during a test
  • Students must be able type essays in response to literature
  • Students must be able to solve math problems in multiple ways. One way is no longer acceptable.
  • Students must be able to research, inquire, and use multiple online resources and articles on the computer screen to provide typed response

As you can see from some of the examples above, there are major shifts and educational reform.  Barton staff is looking forward to the challenge and ready to forge ahead to help all our students become college ready!
